Celebrating Strength: A Newcomer Woman’s Story of Growth and Resilience

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the resilience, determination, and success of newcomer women who are shaping their careers in Canada. In this inspiring story, Canada InfoNet program participant Sandra Nwanozie shares her journey of moving from Nigeria, overcoming job search challenges, and leveraging mentorship and networking to establish herself as a marketing specialist. Her experience highlights the strength of women in adapting to change, supporting one another and thriving in new environments.

A New Beginning

I moved to Canada just before the Christmas holidays from Nigeria. With a background in marketing, my primary goal upon arrival was to secure a position in a growing company where I could apply my creative strategies while expanding my professional network. I was eager to leverage my international experience while adapting to North American marketing practices.

Overcoming Challenges

One of the biggest challenges I encountered was the job search process. It was more difficult than I had initially anticipated. However, I was able to rebuild my professional network, adapt my resume and interview techniques to meet employer expectations.

Surprisingly, adjusting to the Canadian weather was not as physically and mentally taxing as I had expected.

Support Systems That Made a Difference

Having friends who were already Canadian residents was a significant advantage, as they provided guidance and encouragement. Additionally, I joined Canada InfoNet, a pre-arrival service that helped me navigate many of the complexities involved in transitioning to the Canadian job market.

The Power of Mentorship

Among the many resources Canada InfoNet provided, mentorship had the most profound impact on my journey. I was fortunate to be mentored by an extremely smart and encouraging woman who guided me through the job search process.

Advice for Newcomer Women Establishing Their Careers

For newcomer women looking to establish themselves in Canada, here are some key pieces of advice:

  1. Start Networking Early – If possible, begin networking before arriving in Canada. Connect with professionals in your field through LinkedIn and industry-specific organizations. Research the Canadian workplace culture and employer expectations.
  2. Leverage Settlement and Career Services – Take advantage of government-funded programs designed for newcomers. These services offer LinkedIn resources, resume workshops, interview practice, and job search support, all of which can significantly ease your transition.
  3. Stay Resilient and Confident – The transition period can be challenging, but maintaining confidence in your abilities is crucial. Your international perspective and experience bring valuable diversity to Canadian workplaces.
